Sage is Hazel’s dog.1 Hazel calls Sage a familiar, a spirit that has forged an eternal bond with her, and her best friend.2
Biography
Session 2
Sage came along to the Dancing Sword, where the server offered to bring scraps for him. Iva tasted the bowl of stewed meats that arrived and gave it to Sage. Hazel broke off half her bread for him, and Sage took bread from Luma only reluctantly.1
Session 5
Sage ran at Hazel’s side when she scouted the country around Crick's Bend as a wolf on 26 Coldrise, 1714 PSF.3 At dinner in the church, Hazel sat with a hand on his head during grace and motioned for Temerity to do the same.3
Session 6
Hazel counted Sage when she bought pastries for the party at Rebecca Brice’s store.4 That evening at the Sisters' farm, Sage got up into the hayloft of the barn somehow, and came down with Hazel when she dropped through the hay chute.4
Session 7
In the barn at the Sisters' farm, Hazel called Sage up to the hayloft for company, and he butted his head against her leg.5
Session 9
Hazel asked whether Rhysaene had bought Sage any bread at Rebecca Brice’s store. When Rhysaene wondered whether he eats bread, Hazel said it had not killed him yet, and that her dog is magic.6
Session 10
In Vault 13 of the sealed Underforge Vaults under Argentum, Hazel offered Sage some of the coal the fire snakes were eating, calling him a spirit.7
Session 11
On the morning of the Vigil of Remembrance, 1714 PSF, Luma found Sage lying outside Hazel’s lodging with Hazel’s map tied to a makeshift string collar. He put his head in Luma’s lap, and she petted him all morning.8 Hazel has him patrol for her during the night.8 He went down into the vaults beneath the Silver Archives with the party.8
Session 13
Sage went down the Syndicate route with the party and showed strong discomfort in the pressure beneath the Lantern Wards.9
Session 14
Sage waited outside Calypso’s with Hazel’s map on the night of the Vigil of Remembrance, 1714 PSF.2 The next evening at the Dancing Sword, Hazel left Sage beside Dalric Ironmark and watched him through Sage’s senses while she waited upstairs.2 Dalric glared at the dog, and later said it was not Sage’s fault.2 At Luma’s apartment Luma asked whether Sage could fly, and whether Sage was a person. That was a matter of debate in some circles, Hazel said, but she liked to think so.2
Session 15
Sage went with Hazel when she took the shape of a bloodhound to follow Daisy’s trail from Rhysaene's apartment on 2 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF.10
Session 16
Sage lay on the couch with his head in Luma’s lap on 3 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, and cheered her up.11 On 6 Nightdeep, Sage ran in barking at Temerity to distract her at the start of her spar with Hazel.11
Session 17
Sage chased the man following the party through the Hearth Wall on 7 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, leapt clear of a door flung open in the way, and barked until Iva caught up with the man.12 Sage then ran into the house of the man at the door, to draw him off the street, and hid there until Hazel dismissed her familiar. The man spent half an hour searching his house for the dog.12 At the Footlight Theater, Hazel told the troupe that Sage was better behaved than most people.12
Session 18
Hazel told the party that she and Sage can talk to each other the way Luma and Beepo can.13
Session 19
Temerity gave Sage a seafood skewer for breakfast on 9 Nightdeep, 1714 PSF, but no honey bun, since dogs do not eat bread.14
